I've now been in Honduras for about a week. I've been travelling, scuba studying, and lounging with Gwenn, a jovial Irish gal I originally met in Lago de Atitlan.
We began our trek to Honduras on Sunday with a direct (6 hour) shuttle to Copan Ruinas. With the 3:15am rise time, I made a few stinks for poor treatment in the early hours. The Guatemalan border patrol tries to charge you 10 quetzales (approx. $1.25) to cross the border. It's not much, but money only goes in the patroller's pocket. When I detested paying it I was quietly wisked away by my van driver as the others behind me continued to pay. I also harped on the driver's lazyness when he wasn't going to drop us off in town - he understand and his attitude improved. :)
Copan Ruinas - both the town and the ruins - were incredible. The hot and dry climate was a welcome contrast to the cold and almost rainy nights in Antigua. As my first Mayan ruins sighting, I was impressed with the technological feats accomplished hundreds of years ago. I was also amazed with how well the colors and carvings were preserved - the stones were shades of red, green, and yellow!
Gwenn and I only spent a night in Copan Ruinas the town, but next week I plan to spend a few more days discovering the colonial towns that lie hidden in the Honduran mountains and cloud forest.
From Copan, we headed straight to the Bay Islands - known for inexpensive, but safe worldclass diving! So I'm currently getting my certification in Open Water Scuba Diving in Utila, a small island on the Caribbean coast. Breathing in 10 feet underwater already feels like an amazing feat, but today we start practicing in open water. Yikes!
