Last night I watched the sunset from Cafe Sky, located on the roof of a 3-story building overlooking Antigua. The sky turned a brilliant violet against the ominous gray clouds. As I drank my cocktail and enjoyed the view, the full moon rose behind me. I sat, by myself, in awe.
It was the first time in my travels that I wish I could have shared the moment with someone else. Most of the time, my solo journey seems great. After my morning classes and lunch, I study in the afternon, buy myself a treat , and then usually do something special. Yesterday, I took a free salsa and marangue lesson. Of course, las mujeres greatly outnumbered los hambres, but some local guys on the street had no problem stepping in!
I´ve met some great people. Just sitting down in Parque Central you always have someone to talk to. There are so many places I want to go - it´s hard to be in one place for almost 2 weeks. But there are a few more ruinas to see, a town walking tour to take, and a few hikes where I will escape!
On Sunday, I went to San Antonio, a pueblo known for Mayan seamstresses who sew the quetzales (the country´s bird) in their weavings. I met another American, Tim, on the bus and we explored the town together. We went to a local pool (Aguas Calientes - but it was cold) and then we perused the art of the local artistas and weavers. It was a celebration day and guns or cannons kept going off.
Today I sent off my first postcards - the ´mailbox´ was a cardboard box. I also bought my first street comida - a Guatemalan tamale for $.40. We´ll see if my letters make it and my stomach takes it.
